For each year that a person delays claiming up to age 70, his monthly Social Security check goes up 7% to 8%.... Defined-benefit pensions at S&P 500 companies reached a record underfunding level of $354.7 billion at the end of 2011, an increase of more than $100 billion from 2010 and surpassing the $308.4 billion record underfunding level set in 2008, according to a new study by S&P Dow Jones Indices. A recent Barron's article discussed the estimated $3.5 billion paid by mutual funds to brokers, insurance companies and other advisers to 401(k) plans. These payments are euphemistically called 'revenue-sharing.' In reality, they are legal bribes paid to plan advisers, who extract them as the cost of letting these funds gain admission to the investment options in the 401(k) plan.
