1.  Let's Expect Transparency from All, Including the Policymakers
Michael Barry, in PLANSPONSOR Link to more items from this source
May 3, 2016
"If we can insist on transparency from providers and the mutual fund industry, why can't we insist on transparency -- and integrity -- from policymakers? ... That is, if you're going to pass a fiscally irresponsible highway-spending bill because politicians need it to get re-elected, then admit you're being irresponsible, instead of punishing the (in this case at least) totally innocent DB retirement system with uncalled for and double-counted PBGC premiums. While you're at it, make some obvious and simple reforms to make clear where federal tax money for retirement savings is actually being spent. And finally, craft legislation the financial consequences of which can be clearly measured. In other words: be transparent."
2.  The Problem with ESG Investing
Michael Barry in PLANSPONSOR Link to more items from this source
Oct. 30, 2015
"What's really happening is that the power of capital, concentrated in retirement plans, is being used for political ends. Obviously. Does anyone not believe that is what is going on? ... The real problem is when you use someone else's money to advance your political agenda.... Thus the problem isn't prudence -- that standard (competitive 'expected returns), in this dimension at least, is so baggy almost anything would be permitted. The problem is exclusive purpose. Note to fiduciaries: this isn't your money and you shouldn't be using it to advance a personal agenda."
3.  DOL Proposes First Step Into the 21st Century for ERISA Participant Communications
Michael Barry, via PLANSPONSOR; free registration may be required Link to more items from this source
Nov. 3, 2019
"Assuming there are no delays in the process, we could have a functioning, internet-based retirement plan communication system up by early 2020.... [J]ust how far can this new, internet-based approach to ERISA-required retirement plan communications be developed to, e.g., improve employee outcomes?"
