Stop, Look & Listen: Railroad Retirement Benefits Q&A

Answers are provided by Robert S. Kaufman

Impact Of Government Shutdown on Timely Payments

(Posted April 8, 2011)

Question 812: How would the shutdown of the federal government affect the payment of my disability annuity by the Railroad Retirement Board?

Answer: A federal government shutdown would have no effect on the payment of Railroad Retirement benefits to those already on the benefit rolls.

It would affect applicants whose annuity claims are pending because most staff of the Railroad Retirement Board would be on furlough.

It also would affect those who call the agency during the work stoppage.

In the past, government shutdowns usually have lasted only a few hours to a few days.
