My supervisor has asked be to do some research regarding the number of Human Resource staff employees needed to administer benefits at companies similar to ours. We are trying to provide justification for hiring an additional person. I would like to find a survey that may indicate typical averages. For example - Company with 1000 employees typical requires 2-3 employee benefits staff members, etc. Any suggestions?

Kim:

We have 350 employees, 150 FT/200 PT. We have one full time benefits administrator and another person cross trained to assist if necessary.

Good luck.

Recent Employee Benefit News - Hay/Huggins survey info suggests benefits are administered by 2 or fewer staff at over half of entities with 500-1000 employees; around 40% report over 2 benefits staff.

I work in a healthcare organization and we have 5000+ employees. Our benefits office consists of 5 full-time employees. We also have 2 full-time employees who work with the retirement plans, and 3 full-time, 2 part-time employees who work in compensation.

Good luck!

Kim, We have approximately 1500 employees and there are 2 of us full time handling all welfare and retirement plan administration. We are looking to add another person for PY 2000, but will also be taking on more responsibility for recordkeeping for a subsidiary maintaining its own benefits and recordkeeping, and there is always the possibility of acquisitions.

Hope this helps.

We have 11,500 employees and 3,600 retired employees. Our Benefits office is responsible for the administration of Health, Dental, Life, COBRA, Dependent Care, MRA, Wellness, Long Term Care and responds to questions regarding retirement, payroll and deferred comp. We do a lot of data entry (enrollment in plans, listing of dependents and beneficiaries).

Staff is a total of 9. We have two new positions that we are in the process of filing.
