Guest dmcmanus Posted August 15, 2005 Posted August 15, 2005 I cannot find this anywhere in the Form 5500 instructions, but I have been told that a final 5500 cannot be extended. Is this true? Thanks in advance
Guest jefe96 Posted August 15, 2005 Posted August 15, 2005 I had this same question a while ago and was under the impression that an extension could not be filed. Apparently a final 5500 CAN be extended. It does not state anywhere in the instructions that an extension cannot be filed for a final 5500. The only thing to keep in mind is that a final 5500 is due 7 months after all of the assets are disbursed from the plan, not the normal plan year end. So, depending on when the plan no longer had any assets you could be too late to file an extension anyway.
Guest dmcmanus Posted August 15, 2005 Posted August 15, 2005 The Plan's assets were transferred out into another Plan on 1/31/05, so the final 5500 is due on 8/31/05. Could we still file for an automatic 2 1/2 month extension before then?
Guest jefe96 Posted August 15, 2005 Posted August 15, 2005 Correct. Unless someone can state otherwise. You essentially have a short plan year from PY beg - 1/31/05 when the assets were transferred.
Guest Hightower Posted August 15, 2005 Posted August 15, 2005 Correct. Unless someone can state otherwise. You essentially have a short plan year from PY beg - 1/31/05 when the assets were transferred. I agree, we've been doing it for years.
No Name Posted August 16, 2005 Posted August 16, 2005 Assuming a calendar year plan, you have 2004 and 2005 filing requirements.
