Mary C Posted March 29, 2006 Posted March 29, 2006 Are different types of weight loss programs covered under an FSA? For example, bariatric surgery, programs such as Jenny Craig or Weight Watchers, OTC pills, prescription pills? I feel that there is some merit to covering some of these, but balk at covering Jenny Craig meals or Weight Watcher's meeting fees.
Guest b2kates Posted March 29, 2006 Posted March 29, 2006 To be reimbursable under the FSA, the expenses must be for medical. OTC and prescription drugs or physician programs easily qualify; however, items such as Jenny Craig, which supply food are at best dual use and should not be reimbursable. One caveat, if someone has particular food alergies; i.e. gluton and has to spend more for special foods, the additional cost is deductible as a medical expense and should therefore be reimbursable.
namealreadyinuse Posted March 29, 2006 Posted March 29, 2006 I agree. Things like WW or Slimfast are dual purpose. They are not ok if for general health or wellbeing like viatmins. If prescribed or performed by physician to treat specific disease or condition, it should be ok.
