SLuskin Posted March 28, 2007 Posted March 28, 2007 A participant is a musician in a loud band. An audiologist has recommended ear plugs to prevent hearing loss. Do you think this is a qualified expense?
oriecat Posted March 28, 2007 Posted March 28, 2007 I would say no, as it is not to treat a specific existing medical condition, but to prevent.
leevena Posted March 28, 2007 Posted March 28, 2007 Doubt very much if ear plugs would be covered for this situation. However, I do have a suggestion. Since a the 125 plan is giving him a tax deduction, why not deduct the cost of the ear plugs as a business expense? I am assuming that he gets paid as a band member.
WDIK Posted March 28, 2007 Posted March 28, 2007 Would you all kindly SPEAK UP! ...but then again, What Do I Know?
LRDG Posted March 28, 2007 Posted March 28, 2007 RECOMMEND THAT THE BAND MEMBER'S DOC WRITE AN RX. FOR EAR PLUGS.
leevena Posted March 29, 2007 Posted March 29, 2007 RECOMMEND THAT THE BAND MEMBER'S DOC WRITE AN RX. FOR EAR PLUGS. Still won't go. This is preventive.
LRDG Posted March 29, 2007 Posted March 29, 2007 I'm assuming the band member is symptomatic, and treatment of symptoms is not for 'general health or well being' or 'preventative'. How much tax savings is involved, how much can ear plugs cost?

My responses have been tongue in cheek, for the most part. I can't believe someone would actually try to have the 125 plan cover something like this. But, as for the price, it depends on the type of plugs you buy. There are the cheap ones you buy, like for swimming, and then there are the custom ones that cost much more.
