leevena Posted June 6, 2007 Posted June 6, 2007 Yes, medicare premiums can be paid with HSA dollars as can out-of-pocket expenses such as medicare deductibles, co-insurance, etc. HSA dollars cannot pay for gap policy though.

Once the participant is eligible for Medicare, don't they have to stop making/receiving HSA contributions ?
Guest chloe Posted June 6, 2007 Posted June 6, 2007 Once a person is actually entitled to Medicare, they can no longer make HSA contributions, but they can use HSA funds they already have to pay for qualified expenses, including Medicare premiums. If a person is only eligible for Medicare but is not receiving coverage, then they can still make contributions. It is rare, but a person can decline Medicare, even Part A. I've only seen it happen twice and once was a person eligible due to disability, not age.

If you are elgible, but not enrolled, you can open a HSA and you can make contributions.

So the old practice of enrolling in Part A even if you have employer provided coverage does not work if your employer coverage is an HDHP/HSA plan.

Thats true, once enrolled in Part A, the enrollee must stop contributions to the HSA.
