Guest chloe Posted June 25, 2007 Posted June 25, 2007 I'm pretty sure that the cost of a lactation consultant for a healthy newborn is not reimbursable under a health care FSA. However, we're being challenged by a member and I can't locate anything in writing from the IRS. Publication 502 doesn't address it. Can anyone help point to something to help? Thanks!
LRDG Posted June 25, 2007 Posted June 25, 2007 Sec. 213 defines medical expenses eligible for reimbursement from medical FSA and medical expenses eligible for tax deduction purposes. If lactation consultation is provided for more than 'general health or well being' it may be eligible.
Guest jgarber Posted June 26, 2007 Posted June 26, 2007 It does say in the Publication that breast pumps are not an eligible medical expense; however, a lactation consultant is normally used when there are problems encountered with breast feeding - healthy newborn or not. If you are concerned that it is not more than for general health or well being, ask the participant for a doctor's recommendation. This would be the same concept that takes a massage from being a relaxing hour to a medically necessary deductible expense.
