Curious as to how handle new employees and collecting contributions when make coverage retro to date of hire. Is your read of the regs that you can't charge for the period before they affirmatively elect? Or, do you just take a double contribution at the next paycheck?

Having insurance kick in on the date of hire is pretty non-standard these days. Consider changing it to 1st of the month following date of hire or 1st of the month following 30 days. These waiting periods still allow new employees to elect COBRA under their prior employer's plan in a worst case scenario.

As for your question, I would recommend doing a double contribution at some point to get them flush.

I am not sure that we are clear as to what you really are doing.

Is the coverage as of date of hire ( as Matthew222 is addressing) or are you really giving retroactive coverage ?

Would a March 15 hire date mean that I had and knew that I was covered or is it that on April 9th, you tell me that I was covered all along from March 15th?

When would I have enrolled?

What is the date on the application?

Did your insurance carrier agree to this retroactive coverage?

Coverage would be back to date of hire (assuming enroll within 30 days of hire). Individual hired on April 1, enrolled in benefits April 17th, would have coverage back to April 1. Yes, insurance carriers have agreed, but mainly we are self-insured.
