austin3515 Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 We're getting notices from the IRS for plans that DID file for 2012, reminding them that they need to file again for 2013. Is anyone else getting these notices and/or does anyone have any insight into why they're sending these? At first I thought perhaps they would send to just those who filed in 2011, but not in 2012. But the ones we have received DID file in 2012. Austin Powers, CPA, QPA, ERPA
WDIK Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 We have already been contacted by a significant number of our clients regarding this notice. Of course the client doesn't understand that this is a reminder notice and starts stressing out about a 12/31/2013 deadline or a missed deadline or a new filing requirement. Thanks IRS. ...but then again, What Do I Know?
austin3515 Posted November 12, 2013 Author Posted November 12, 2013 Thanks indeed. Very worthwhile for clients who are already have been filing. Is it possible that they were more efficient during the shutdown than before or after? Austin Powers, CPA, QPA, ERPA
GMK Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 Is it possible that they were more efficient during the shutdown than before or after? You may be on to something. You can get a lot done after hours, when no one is around to bug you with new questions.
Guest KristenE Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 One of my clients just faxed a copy of the same notice that they received. I called the number at the end of the notice, and the voicemail greeting started out by saying if you received a CP 214 notice and have filed your 5500-EZ or 5500-SF, then ignore the notice. They must be getting a lot of calls.
austin3515 Posted November 13, 2013 Author Posted November 13, 2013 That is priceless... It's almost as though they do not realize that taxpayers see a notice from the IRS and automatically assume there must be a problem. Austin Powers, CPA, QPA, ERPA
Guest kpension Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 Some of my clients are also receiving this notice and it makes reference to the 2010 instructions. I suspect that the reference is a ploy to send out another mass mailing, to correct this notice. Someone is obviously trying to keep postal workers busy while wasting paper on the two page notices. In addition to this notice, I received late filing notices on my two plans, which were filed timely. I responded to the notices and then I receive another notice for each plan stating that they received my correspondence but "haven't resolved this matter because we haven't completed all the research necessary for a complete response." These were also 2- page notices that were totally unnecessary, and I am sure that I will receive additional notices. Someone has found a way to waste a lot of paper and I am surprised that it has lasted this long.
shERPA Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 We're getting them too. 3 calls so far today. Is Treasury trying to bail out the postal service by generating lots of snail mail? What a waste of time, money, energy and trees. Don't they realize people freak out when they get letters from the IRS? I carry stuff uphill for others who get all the glory.
goldtpa Posted November 17, 2013 Posted November 17, 2013 We have also been getting calls, emails, and letters about this. It's as if my clients don't read. One client called and said he was not to happy that I did not file the 5500. I had to tell him to re-read the letter. It's no wonder why the govt has no money. They spend money to remind people to file. It's like reminding people to sleep or eat. My clients know that every year they have to file, so why waste the money? Govt at its best.
