Does anyone know if it is acceptable to

distribute SAR's via e-mail as opposed to hardcopy? Thanks for your help.

So long as it is a method wich reasonably ensures that each participant will receive a copy, and are able to print a hard copy, you're good! For those participants that do not have access to e-mail you will have to fall back on paper distribution.
