Schedule D

I am filling out my first Sch D for a Manulife plan for 1999.

The way I read the IRS instructions and Manulife's interpretation of how to fill out Sch D is that you have to fill out the name of the PSA (I have pooled sep accts), the name of the sponsor entity, the EIN, the PN, the entity code, and the value of the PSA interest as of the last day of the plan year, for EVERY PSA the plan invests in. Manulife currently offers about 40 PSA's. Hence Sch D data has to be filled out 40 times. This seems extremely onerous.

I would love to just fill out the basic info once, and then attach an excel-generated schedule listing all the PSA's and the year end balance, but I know the 5500 processor the gov't hired will not read attachments.

Am I right about what has to be done w/ Sch D or is there a better way?

Thanks for any help.

Part 1 of Schedule D includes lines for 6 different PSAs. If your plan has more than that, the filing instructions imply that you can attach additional copies of page 2, which lists just the information for the PSAs without the title section of the Form. See the specific instructions for Part I of Schedule D.

Thanks for your response Becky - I am still a little unclear. I realize I can get away w/o

re-completing the plan sponsor information for each additional attached page 2, but I am still fuzzy on some details.

I want to avoid having to stick page 2's into the typewriter (our software provider has not yet had its scannable forms approved by the 5500 processor) and literally typing multiple additional page 2's.

An Excel schedule would solve my problem. But I have heard from many different sources that this type of attached schedule will be ignored by the processor. Is this correct?

If I am right, I don't see any option besides waiting for my software to be approved, getting new software, or literally typing many many page 2's (because the information typed is supposed to fall into the pre-printed boxes - which cannot be done on Excel).

Hope I'm making sense. I'm trying to preempt govermentally-rejected 5500's. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Per an informed DOL source: they are expecting massive problems with the 1999 filings; they will accept virtually anything, as long as it's complete (typed, computerized, hand written), etc.; they are committed to having human beings review every computer-rejected form before sending letters to employers. My suggestion if you can't wait is to just fill out the page 2's by hand, it'll be quicker than typing.
