MEPs, IRAs, and More: DOL Guidance on State Plans

FIS Relius Education

Mar. 8, 2016
Recorded Online
Webcast

[Recorded online and available for purchase.]

This is the second of two Web seminars dealing with Multiple Employer Plans (MEPs). The first one, "Multiple Employer Plans: How MEPs Work for Private Employers," is scheduled for March 1, 2016.

The DOL has recently published guidance on four alternatives states can use to promote retirement plan savings. The guidance allows states to do things no private employer or organization can do, and has the potential to change the landscape and economics of retirement plan practice. This 60-minute program will discuss all four alternatives, and show how some states are already acting.

Topics include:
- ERISA exempt automatic contribution IRAs
- Unique state powers
- Alternative approaches
- ERISA plans
- Marketplace
- State prototype
- State MEP
- Unique state powers
- Potential pitfalls
- State status

Prerequisites:
There are no prerequisites or other advanced preparation for this program. However, the speaker will assume attendees have a working knowledge of multiple employer plans, such as is in our March 1 Webcast, "Multiple Employer Plans: How MEPs Work for Private Employers". At least 1 year of experience in working with qualified retirement plans is recommended.

Level: Intermediate

Instructional Delivery Method: Group Internet-Based

NASBA Field of Study: Taxes

Speaker: S. Derrin Watson, J.D.
Recipient of ASPPA's 2006 Educator of the Year Award

Objectives: After this seminar, attendees should be able to do the following with regard to multiple employer plans:

- List the alternative approaches the DOL is authorizing states to pursue
- Contrast state-run and private MEPs
- Explain the current status of the DOL guidance
