Although popular with employers and employees, 401(k) plans pose significant administrative burdens on employers, plan administrators and payroll providers. Consequently, even the most well-administered plan has plan errors. In recognition of the frequency of 401(k) plan errors, the IRS has provided specific correction methods for many of the errors. For the other errors, the employer must rely on the general correction principles outlined in the IRS’s corrections procedure.
