Press release:

PBGC and Society of Actuaries Announce Data Agreement on PIMS

Issued by: Society of Actuaries

Date: Feb. 2, 2016

Schaumburg, IL and Washington, D.C. (February 2, 2016) - The Society of Actuaries (SOA) and the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC) today announced the renewal of an agreement for access to PBGC's Pension Insurance Modeling System (PIMS) for SOA research. PIMS are PBGC's modeling systems that look at the universe of private sector pension plans.

PBGC uses it to estimate future outcomes for its single-employer and multiemployer PBGC programs and to model the United States private pension system. The SOA has previously worked with PIMS in completing research on post-2013 pension contributions.

"We value having access to the PBGC's modeling systems as we perform private pension research, modeling and analysis to inform SOA members, employers and the public," said SOA Managing Director of Research, R. Dale Hall, FSA, CERA, MAAA.

PBGC Policy, Research and Analysis Department Director, Christopher Bone, FSA, MAAA, EA, said, "We welcome the opportunity for the SOA to continue its use of PIMS to inform and research private sector pensions."

About the SOA

The Society of Actuaries (SOA) is an educational, research and professional organization dedicated to serving the public, its members and its candidates. The SOA's mission is to advance actuarial knowledge and to enhance the ability of actuaries to provide expert advice and relevant solutions for financial, business and societal problems. The SOA's vision is for actuaries to be the leading professionals in the measurement and management of risk.

About the PBGC

The Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC) protects the pension benefits of more than 40 million Americans in private-sector pension plans. The agency is directly responsible for paying the benefits of about 1.5 million people in failed pension plans. PBGC receives no taxpayer dollars and never has. Its operations are financed by insurance premiums, investment income, and with assets and recoveries from failed single-employer plans. For more information, visit PBGC.gov.
