Press release:

Richard J. Pearl Joins Drinker Biddle's ESOP Team

Issued by: Drinker Biddle & Reath LLP

Date: May 16, 2016

May 16, 2016 -- Drinker Biddle continues to enhance its Employee Benefits and Executive Compensation Practice with the addition of Richard J. Pearl, who joins as counsel in the firm’s Chicago office. Rick joins the firm’s highly regarded ESOP Team and reunites with Ted Becker, who is Chair of Drinker Biddle’s National ERISA and ESOP litigation practice.

Over the course of his career, Rick has defended high-profile ERISA / ESOP lawsuits, representing ESOP company plan sponsors and fiduciaries against claims for prohibited transactions and breach of fiduciary duties.

Rick represents companies, their directors and officers, ERISA plan fiduciaries, and service providers in ERISA litigation, and counsels plan sponsors, internal and external fiduciaries, and others on ERISA insurance-procurement, insurance, and indemnification issues. He co-authored (with Ted Becker) a respected NCEO Issue Brief, “A Buyer’s Guide to Insurance for Fiduciaries of ESOPs and other Benefit Plans.”

Rick also represents clients in commercial litigation matters, including co-chairing a four-week RICO jury trial in federal court, defending class actions for retail industry clients, and leading aspects of large, multi-year litigation in the medical device and mass tort areas.

“Rick’s experience handling ERISA and other complex commercial litigation matters expands our capabilities as clients look to efficiently and effectively reduce the risk of, and defend against, a variety of ERISA claims,” said Sarah Bassler Millar, partner and Chair of Drinker Biddle’s Employee Benefits and Executive Compensation Group. “He is well respected among his peers and his addition further aids in the growth of the Chicago office and the practice overall.”

In addition to his legal practice, Rick is a CLIO-award winning songwriter and producer. Some of the artists he has worked with include Lady Gaga and Pitbull.

Rick earned his law degree from Loyola University Chicago School of Law and his B.S. in Psychology and Philosophy from Northern Illinois University.
