Press release:

IRI Voices Support of Open MEPs Before Senate HELP Subcommittee Hearing

Issued by: Insured Retirement Institute [IRI]

Date: June 21, 2016

Open MEPs Would Help Close Retirement Plan Coverage Gap

WASHINGTON, D.C., June 21, 2016 – The Insured Retirement Institute (IRI) released the following statement from IRI President and CEO Cathy Weatherford in support of expanding access to multiple employer plans or MEPs. IRI voiced its support for open MEPS in a letter submitted to Chairman Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.) and Ranking Member Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Subcommittee on Primary Health and Retirement Security in advance of today’s hearing on open MEPs.

“Workplace plans are a powerful tool in helping Americans save and prepare for their retirement years. Unfortunately too many Americans don’t have access to a retirement plan at work, leaving many ill-prepared to meet their future financial needs. This coverage gap is most acute among workers of small businesses. Allowing more startups and small businesses to join multiple employer plans would greatly increase the number of workers with access to a workplace plan and go a long way toward helping Americans prepare and save for their future financial security. As such, IRI strongly supports open MEPs and has made pursuing open MEPs legislation a key component of our 2016 retirement security agenda. We see wide-spread, bipartisan support for allowing more small businesses to join MEPs and are optimistic this is an area where policymakers can come together to advance an important retirement security initiative. We thank Chairman Enzi and Ranking Member Sanders for holding this hearing and look forward to working with them to help advance open MEPs legislation.”
