PSCA Announces 59th Annual Survey

Issued by: PSCA [Plan Sponsor Council of America]

Date: June 23, 2016

2016 survey report to include expanded trend data and analysis

Chicago (June 23, 2016) – The Plan Sponsor Council of America today announced that its 59th Annual Survey is available and encouraged plan sponsors to participate. All survey respondents will receive a free copy of the survey results.

PSCA's annual survey is considered the premiere source of plan benchmarking data and provides more than 180 tables of data on topics including:

  • Asset-investment trends and fund offerings
  • Automatic enrollment and auto increase default rates
  • Company contributions and matching formulas
  • Investment advice
  • Participation and deferral rates
  • Roth 401(k)
  • Participant education
  • Plan administration practices
“As the leading association for sponsors of work-based retirement plans, a key element of our agenda is advancing the interests of the nation’s plan sponsors and their participants,” said Tony Veyheyen, PSCA’s executive director. “Our annual survey provides the information plan sponsors need to help participants save and improve retirement outcomes. We urge all plan sponsors to take part.”

This year’s survey has been redesigned and shortened to make participation quicker and more efficient and will include more data and analysis.  Among the new data to be gathered in the 2016 survey:

  • The number of plans using Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG) investment options, also known as responsible investment options.
  • Whether plans are allowing in-plan Roth conversions.
  • Whether plans are providing in-plan annuities to participants.
Among the trends PSCA will be tracking through the survey are whether participants will continue the recent pattern of contributing more and withdrawing less money than in previous years; whether there is a shift toward higher automatic enrollment default rates and automatic escalation rates; and whether there is an increase in the use of mobile technology for participant education.

How to take part in the survey:

  • Participate online: The online survey is available to both new and returning survey takers. Those who completed the survey in 2015 will find that their plan information has been imported into the online survey. Simply review plan information, update it with changes, and submit.
  • Mail or fax: Download the questionnaire and return via fax (312.275.7171) or mail to 200 S. Wacker Drive, Suite 3100, Chicago, IL 22602
  • Respondents can download a worksheet with a list of questions they may need to look up. The deadline for completed responses is July 15, 2016.
All information provided in the survey will remain confidential; only aggregate data will be published. All survey respondents will receive a free copy of the 59th Annual Survey Report, which otherwise would cost $595. More information is available at
