About the Insured Retirement Institute
- Nick Lane
Nick Lane, who is the outgoing Chairman of the IRI Board of Directors, served on the IRI Board for five years and on the IRI Executive Committee for three years. During his tenure as Board Chairman, he led IRI’s efforts to provide constructive input to policymakers on the then-proposed Department of Labor (DOL) fiduciary rule. These efforts included leading IRI’s delegation during meetings with regulators and the White House, testifying during the DOL’s hearing on the rule, and participating in four IRI “fly-ins” to meet with lawmakers on the rule. After the rule’s finalization, Mr. Lane oversaw IRI’s efforts to help member companies prepare to operate under the new rule, including the development of more than 15 working groups that are helping IRI member companies navigate particular aspects of implementation. He also helped direct IRI’s strategic planning process to solidify IRI’s status as a “first-call resource” among policymakers and other stakeholders.
Mr. Lane was promoted to President and CEO of AXA Japan in May, after serving as Senior Executive Director and Head of U.S. Life and Retirement for AXA. During his tenure with AXA, he has served in numerous leadership positions, including Chairman of the Board, President and CEO of AXA Distributors; Member of the Board of Directors of AXA Advisors; and President of AXA’s Individual Annuity and Employer-Sponsored business lines. Before joining AXA in 2005, Mr. Lane was a leader in the sales and marketing practice of the global management consulting firm McKinsey & Company. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from Princeton University and a Master of Business Administration from Harvard Business School. Mr. Lane also served as a captain in the U.S. Marine Corps.
- John Brown
Before his recent retirement, John Brown was a long-time leader on many of IRI’s government affairs committees and was instrumental in helping IRI expand its advocacy efforts at both the federal and state levels. He recently served six years as the Chair of the IRI State Affairs Committee, during which time the committee doubled in size. Mr. Brown also served on IRI’s Federal Affairs Committee and its Government Affairs Advisory Council. His contributions helped to support IRI’s efforts to advocate for the uniform adoption of the NAIC’s annuity suitability model laws; to achieve congressional enactment of the National Association of Registered Agents and Brokers Reform Act (NARAB II); and to build support among state insurance regulators on retirement security issues that led to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners’ announcement of a new retirement security initiative. Mr. Brown also was a past Co-chair of the IRI Government, Legal and Regulatory Conference.
Mr. Brown retired last month as Vice President of Government Relations for Jackson National Life Insurance Company. In this role, a post he held for 13 years, he oversaw the company’s government relations efforts at the local, state and federal levels. He also led Jackson’s corporate communications department. His 35-year career in government relations also included serving as President of the Grand Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce from 1998 to 2003, and as Director of Worldwide Government Relations for Amway Corporation from 1981 to 1998. Mr. Brown’s career began as an Associate Attorney for Varnum Riddering. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from Hope College and a Juris Doctorate from the University of Michigan Law School.
