IRI Announces 2018 Retirement Security Champs Award Winner

Issued by Insured Retirement Institute [IRI]

Dec. 3, 2018

WASHINGTON, D.C., November 30, 2018 - The Insured Retirement Institute (IRI) today honored Rep. Ron Kind (D-Wis.) and Rep. Tim Walberg (R-Mich.) with the "Champion of Retirement Security" award for leadership to advance legislative solutions to address the nation's looming retirement crisis by helping Americans save more for retirement.

Established in 2013, the IRI Champion of Retirement Security Award distinguishes the important work done by public policy makers to enhance retirement security in the United States.

"This year's IRI Champions of Retirement Security have demonstrated their leadership and commitment through their actions in Congress to enhance the financial security of their fellow Americans - ensuring all Americans face fewer risks and maintain a comfortable standard of living once their working years are behind them," said Cathy Weatherford, IRI president and CEO.

IRI recognized Rep. Kind as a Retirement Security Champion for his strong advocacy as a member of the House Ways and Means Committee to strengthen retirement security for Americans.

Kind is an original cosponsor of the Retirement Enhancement and Savings Act of 2018 (RESA) as well as a sponsor of several other significant common-sense policy proposals to strengthen retirement security including the Small Businesses Add Value to Employees (SAVE) Act the Lifetime Income Disclosure Act, the RETIRE Act, and the Increasing Access to a Secure Retirement Act of 2017.

Rep. Walberg, Chairman of the House Committee on Education and Workforce's Subcommittee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions, is a leader and champion for Americans across the country who are struggling to adequately prepare for their retirement.

IRI recognized Rep. Walberg for his instrumental role in the successful effort to include a provision in all of the comprehensive retirement bills introduced in Congress this session including RESA, the Family Savings Act and, most recently in the Retirement, Savings, and Other Tax Relief Act, which will make lifetime income options more available to workers in their employer sponsored retirement plans.

In addition, Rep. Walberg sponsored the Congressional Review Act resolution to disapprove the state-run retirement plan rule and was the co-sponsor of the Federal Insurance Office Reform Act of 2017, and the Affordable Retirement Advice for Savers Act.

"We are very thankful for the dynamic leadership of Reps. Tim Walberg and Ron Kind have displayed to pursue actions to help all Americans achieve a financially secure retirement," Weatherford said.
