IRI Announces 2019 Retirement Security Champs Award Winners

Issued by Insured Retirement Institute [IRI]

Nov. 7, 2019

Sen. Chuck Grassley and Sen. Ron Wyden Lauded as “Steadfast Advocates”of Retirement Security Initiatives

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Insured Retirement Institute (IRI) today honored Senate Finance Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and Senate Finance Committee Ranking Member Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) with the organization’s “Champion of Retirement Security” award for leadership to advance legislative solutions to address the nation’s looming retirement crisis by helping Americans save more for retirement.

Established in 2013, the IRI Champion of Retirement Security Award recognizes the important work done by public policy makers to enhance retirement security in the United States.

“We are very proud to present IRI’s Champion of Retirement Security award to two Senators who have been long-standing and steadfast advocates of strengthening and enhancing retirement security so that more Americans can enjoy a secure and dignified life during their retirement years,” said Wayne Chopus, IRI president and CEO. “Senator Grassley and Senator Wyden are committed partners in the effort to find solutions to address our nation’s retirement crisis.”

Sen. Grassley supports several legislative elements of IRI’s Federal Retirement Security Blueprint, including the Retirement Enhancement and Savings Act (RESA), which he had previously supported as a member of the committee.

Now in his role as Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, his support of RESA has extended to support of the enactment of the Setting Every Community Up for Retirement Enhancement (SECURE) Act and he consistently expresses support for comprehensive retirement reforms through op-eds and remarks in the congressional record.

Retirement security policy is at the top of Sen. Wyden’s priority list. He is an original cosponsor of RESA, which includes several of IRI’s key federal legislative priorities, as well as an advocate for passage of the SECURE Act. Wyden also has introduced the Retirement Parity for Student Loans Act, another of IRI’s legislative goals, to give working Americans the ability to save for the future while repaying their student loans.

“Committing to saving for future needs is difficult enough, but it is also clear that many Americans don’t have access to a retirement-savings plan. For those who are able to save, it can be daunting to make sure that sufficient funds are set aside to live in retirement as well as make sure they last throughout retirement. As chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, I will continue to work with my colleagues on solutions that help more American workers save for a secure retirement. I am grateful to the Insured Retirement Institute for this award and for the work this industry has done to advance this important legislation,” Grassley said.

“One of the pillars of a middle-class American life is being able to retire with dignity and financial security. Every American wants the ability to spend their older years with their families without having to worry about how to pay the bills. Achieving that goal is getting harder and harder and we need to come together to address the coming retirement crisis. I would like to thank the Insured Retirement Institute for this honor and particularly appreciate their support of my legislation to help ensure workers are able to save for retirement while paying their student loans,” Wyden said.

“IRI is grateful to both Senators for their ardent support of retirement security for all Americans and we are proud to present them with this year’s award,” Chopus said.
