ECFC Introduces New HR Education Certification: Certified COBRA Specialist (CCS) Designation

Issued by ECFC [Employers Council on Flexible Compensation]

Oct. 1, 2020

Washington, D.C. – September 30, 2020 – ECFC, the leading nonprofit organization promoting choice in benefit solutions, today announced that a new Certified COBRA Specialist (CCS) designation is now available for ECFC members and non-members as part of the organization’s employee benefits industry certification program. The CCS designation joins ECFC’s certifications along with the existing COBRA Administration Specialist (CAS) designation.

“Our COBRA certifications are more relevant than ever in today’s economy and provide education and guidance related to the specialized rules and regulations that govern the administration of COBRA,” said Christa Day, Executive Director for ECFC. “In the quickly changing healthcare landscape, these designations will help HR administrators and other professionals better manage and navigate the complexities of COBRA.”

Designed for professionals who are new to COBRA, the Certified COBRA Specialist designation provides specialized training as well as refreshers in the more basic COBRA concepts. Presented in four sessions, CCS covers these COBRA basics:

  • Who Must Comply, Who is Exempt and Who is Eligible
  • Offering COBRA Coverage
  • Calculating COBRA Premiums and Paying for COBRA Coverage
  • COBRA and Consumer Driven Health Care (CDHC)

The COBRA Administration Specialist designation is designed for professionals who frequently handle COBRA administration and are looking to expand their core competencies. Presented in eight sessions, the COBRA Administration Specialist includes the COBRA basics as well as:

  • Mergers and Acquisitions
  • Alternative Coverage and Retiree Issues
  • COBRA and Other Laws
  • COBRA Case Studies

ECFC’s Certified COBRA Specialist (CCS) and COBRA Administration Specialist (CAS) are available for members and non-members. Individuals who successfully complete the study program and online exam earn a certificate and an online badge.  For more information, visit: https://ecfc.org/page/CCS.

In addition to the new Certified COBRA Specialist (CCS) and COBRA Administration Specialist (CAS) designations, other certifications in the overall ECFC industry designations program include: Flexible Compensation Specialist (FCS); Certified in Flexible Compensation (CFC); Advanced Certification in Flexible Compensation (ACFC); Certified Flexible Compensation Instructor (CFCI); and Advanced Certification in Flexible Compensation Instructor (ACFCI).
