LIMRA Expands Its Data Exchange Standards for Non-Medical Workplace Benefits

Issued by LIMRA

Oct. 5, 2020

WINDSOR, Conn., Oct. 5, 2020 – LIMRA today expanded its data exchange standards to allow benefits administration technology companies and insurance carriers to share coverage elections, changes, and terminations, as well as non-coverage demographic changes.

Initially released in January 2020, LIMRA Data Exchange Standards (LDEx) are designed to standardize the data shared between insurance carriers and benefits administration technology companies for non-medical employee benefits. It is designed to reduce errors, drive consistency and streamline the process.

“Before the pandemic, nearly half of U.S. employers (47%) used an online benefits enrollment program during open enrollment. As the pandemic forced many employees to work from home, our research shows that more employers are interested in adding or increasing the use of online enrollment programs to accommodate their remote workforce,” said InAh Chambers, director, LIMRA member relations and sales, Workplace Benefits. “Expanding our standards will continue to support greater accuracy and efficiency in the data exchanged between insurance companies and benefits administration technology companies, enabling our members to better serve their clients.”

In addition to allowing two-way data exchange of post-enrollment data between carriers and benefits administration companies, the latest release also supports:

  • Identity theft prevention and legal products;
  • Beneficiary management;
  • Enrollment forms; and
  • Coverage changes within an existing policy.

Developed by LIMRA, in partnership with the industry, LDEx is the latest shared solution to address common industry concerns. LIMRA worked with its Data Exchange Standards Committee to develop and test these standards. The committee consists of 42 companies, with the participating insurance companies representing 90% of the in-force non-medical workplace benefits market.
