Converting a Disability Annuity
(Posted November 2, 2014)
Question 1209: I am currently collecting occupational disability with 20 years of railroad service. I will be turning 62 in 2015. Can I collect disability and early retirement at the same time or is it better to wait until age 66 for retirement?
Answer: If you're receiving a Disability Annuity, you cannot receive a Retirement Annuity. Your Disability Annuity is higher that what you would receive from a reduced Retirement Annuity at 62. Your Disability Annuity will automatically be converted to a Retirement Annuity when you reach your full retirement age. The annuity rate will not change.
