Spouse Has Options for Retirement Benefits
(Posted November 18, 2014)
Question 1221: I am on Disability from Railroad Retirement. My wife may need to retire on disability from a state (Virginia) job at age 55. Will she draw a benefit from Railroad Retirement, Social Security, or Virginia?
Answer: Your wife will be eligible for a Spouse Annuity at 62 from Railroad Retirement.
She can receive her own Social Security benefit, but Tier 1 of her Spouse Annuity then would be reduced.
If her position with the Virginia government is covered by Social Security, there would be no further reduction in her Tier 1.
