Stop, Look & Listen: Railroad Retirement Benefits Q&A

Answers are provided by Robert S. Kaufman

Impact of a Private Non-Rail Pension

(Posted May 29, 2016)

Question 1246: I receive a Tier 2 total disability benefit. Before working for the railroad and becoming injured, I worked a number of years for a family-owned business. My employment at that business ended a few years before I started with the railroad. What will happen to my disability benefit if I start to receive a small pension benefit from the family-owned business?

Answer:

Your private pension would have no effect on your Railroad Retirement Annuity.
