Answers are provided by Robert S. Kaufman

When a New Spouse Qualifies

(Posted September 7, 2002)

Question 192: I'm a divorced 48 year old rail worker with 29-1/2 years of credits. I plan to get remarried this January. When will my new wife qualify for benefits?

Answer: A new husband or wife is eligible as a spouse under Railroad Retirement after nine months of marriage to a rail worker. But your new wife won't become entitled to any benefits until age 60.
