Coordination with SSA Is Automatic
(Posted June 3, 2003)
Question 262: My husband is retiring in July at 60. I'm 61. Do we notify SSA, or does the RRB?
Answer: RRB automatically coordinates with SSA when a worker retires under Railroad Retirement. The RRB notifies SSA via computer. SSA earmarks its master record and furnishes the RRB with the worker's Social Security earnings, which RRB needs to calculate Tier 1 benefits. A similar process is used when a spouse or survivor files at RRB.
