Wife of Disabled Worker
(Posted June 23, 2003)
Question 276: I'm 57, with more than 10 years of rail service. I'm applying for disability benefits and I am wondering whether my 51-year-old wife (whose is unemployed and is my caregiver) is eligible for any benefits.
Answer: Normally, your wife would not be eligible for a wife's benefit until she reaches 62. But if you still have a child under 18 when you reach 62, she could qualify at that point.
