Benefits for New Spouse Following Remarriage
(Posted September 27, 1999; revised March 9, 2000)
Question 30: I understand that a divorced spouse can receive Tier 1 benefits under certain conditions. But if a railroader remarries, what benefits are provided for his or her new spouse?
Answer: The new husband or wife can qualify for benefits normally paid under Railroad Retirement. Payments to a former spouse have no effect on benefits paid to a new spouse.
With a few exceptions, the new spouse can not qualify for benefits until (s)he & the Rail worker are married for one year.
