Full Widow's Benefits
(Posted November 13, 2003)
Question 332: Does a widow get her husband's pension or only a portion of it?
Answer: A widow now gets her husband's full Tier 1 and full Tier 2. Railroad Retirement was changed in 2001 to increase a widow's Tier 2. Certain widows who had been receiving benefits for several years did not receive an increase, however, because their reduced Tier 2 rate with the annual cost-of-living increases had become higher than the full Tier 2 amount.
