Benefits for New Wife After Remarriage
(Posted December 31, 2003)
Question 355: I was married for 43 years before my wife died. If I remarry, will my new wife get benefits, too?
Answer: Your new wife will qualify for spouse benefits after you've been married for one year. But the 1-year waiting period is waived if she was receiving either a spouse or widow's benefit from Railroad Retirement when you married her.
