Amount of Widow Benefits
(Posted February 21, 2004)
Question 383: A railroad employee died with 30 years of service. What percentage of his annuity would his wife of over 50 years be entitled to?
Answer: She should receive the same amount as he was receiving when he died.
The 2001 amendments to the Railroad Retirement program increased the widow's Tier 2 benefit from 50% to 100% of the employee's Tier 2 benefit. (Tier 1 had been increased to 100% several years earlier.)
