Is Early Payout of Divorced Spouse's Tier 2 Benefit Possible?
(Posted April 30, 2004)
Question 441: Since you say the Tier 2 benefit can be divided, is there any way a divorced spouse can access the Tier 2 benefit before her retirement age?
Answer: No. Unlike many private pensions, Railroad Retirement does not have a "lump-sum" payment option. A divorced spouse must wait for her former spouse to retire under Railroad Retirement before his or her share of the Tier 2 is paid in monthly installments.
