Purchasing Durable Medical Equipment Under Medicare

(Posted July 4, 2004)

Question 475: I am a 79 year old retired railroader. I sufferred a stroke on Jan 8, 2003. I am in need of a shower bench. Will Medicare pay 80% of the cost and, if so, what is the procedure for purchasing this item through Medicare?

Answer: You should contact Palmetto GBA, which is the RRB Part B Medical Insurance Carrier.

Palmetto GBA's address is P.O. Box 10066, Augusta, GA 30999. Their toll-free number is 1-800-833-4455.

They can explain what you and your doctor need to do for you to receive reimbursement for a shower bench.
