Survivor Benefits for Widow(er) of Disabled Worker
(Posted October 13, 2004)
Question 522: My husband was mandatorily placed on Railroad Retirement early due to a disability. If he dies, approximately what will my benefits be?
Answer: As a widow, you should receive approximently what he receives, if you are at least 60 when he dies. Your benefit will be reduced if you are less than normal retirement age (65 & 6 months, for people born in 1940) or if you are entitled to your own Social Security or Railroad Retirement benefits.
Your Tier 1 also might be reduced if you are receiving a government pension and your work was not covered by Social Security.
