Dual Benefits for Railroad Couples
(Posted November 25, 2006)
Question 612: My wife and I are both vested rail workers. My rail service began in 1975. Hers began in 1981. Can we each receive a spouse annuity in addition to our retirement annuity?
Answer: Rail couples are entitled to full dual retirement and spouse annutities if at least one of them began rail service before 1975.
If neither spouse began service until after 1974, they do not enjoy that right. Each spouse annuity is reduced by the amount of his or her own retirement annuity. The reduction applies to both Tier 1 and Tier 2 benefits.
