Reduction in Spouse and Widow(er)s Benefits due to Government Pension
(Posted May 7, 2009)
Question 706: When will a widow's annuity not be adjusted, if she had a civil
service job for the county she lived in?
Answer: The law calls for a reduction in both Social Security and Railroad Retirement benefit payments when a spouse or widow(er) receives a government pension from employment by a federal, state, county or local government that was not covered by Social Security.
The reduction is equal to 2/3 of the monthly government pension. It is applied to your Tier 1 benefit.
