Future of Railroad Retirement
(Posted August 6, 2009)
Question 719: If Railroad Retirement goes under in the future, will I be able to switch over to social security?
Answer: Periodically, the Railroad Retirement Board's Chief Actuary reviews the current financing of the system using three different sets of assumptions. The latest review was completed in the spring of 2009. Two of the calculations showed that Railroad Retirement will not encounter any cash flow problems in the next 75 years. The third, using the most pessimistic assumptions, showed the system is solvent to at least 2031, 22 years from now. There is no immediate financial threat to Railroad Retirement.
