Medicare Procedures for Railroad Retirement Beneficiaries
(Posted November 25, 2009)
Question 738: Do Railroad Retirement Medicare recipients require precertification for outpatient medical services and, if so, what number do I call to obtain
precertification? Do inpatient medical services require precertification? There is no phone number on our patient's card.
Answer: Railroad Retirement Beneficiaries are covered by Medicare under the same rules & regulations as Social Security Beneficiaries.
The only significant difference is their Part B (Medical) claims are paid by a single nationwide carrier. Currently, the RRB carrier is Palmetto GBA & their toll free number is (800) 833-4455.
You should call them for specific instructions on when & how to obtain precertications.
