Adult Disabled Child Plans to Marry

Question 901: My husband worked for the railroad 10 years. When he died, his daughter was 18 and disabled. She qualified for an annuity as an adult disabled child. She is now 43 and planning to get married to a young man who is also disabled and receives SSI. Can she marry this young man without loosing her Railroad Retirement benefits?

Answer: Normally, an adult disabled child will lose her annuity if she marries.

I suggest that you contact the Railroad Retirement Board (RRB) to see if there is an exception if the disabled child marries another disabled child who receives SSI benefits.
