Stop, Look & Listen: Railroad Retirement Benefits Q&A

Answers are provided by Robert S. Kaufman

Calculation of Spouse Annuity

(Posted December 29, 2012)

Question 939: How is a Spouse Annuity calculated?

Answer: Like the rail worker's annuity, the Spouse Annuity is composed of two components. Tier 1 is 50% of the employee's Tier 1; Tier 2 is 45% of the employee's Tier 2.

Tier 1 will be reduced by any Social Security benefits the spouse is receiving. If the rail worker has less than 30 years of rail service, the spouse annuity would be reduced for age if it begins before the spouse reaches the full retirement age.
