Spouse With Dual Benefits
(Posted March 9, 2013)
Question 980: Can I collect on my own Social Security while my husband collects Railroad Retirement?
Answer: You can, but sometimes it's to your advantage to take one benefit at the earliest retirement age and withhold filing for the other benefit until you've reached full retirement age.
Just remember that your Spouse Annuity contains Tier 2 which, added to your Social Security benefit, produces a higher total monthly benefit.
