Do Benefits from the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS) Affect a Spouse Annuity?
(Posted April 1, 2013)
Question 997: My wife will have a Federal (FERS) pension from her Postal service. I will have a Railroad Retirement Annuity with 41 years of service. How will her Spouse Annuity be figured with her FERS pension?
Answer: Since Federal workers under FERS are covered by Social Security, a Spouse Annuities is not reduced for that pension.
But, if your wife receives Social Security, her Tier 1 will be reduced by the amount of that benefit.
