Who's the Employer?

Answers are provided by S. Derrin Watson, JD, APM

6th Edition of My Book, Who's the Employer

(Posted April 10, 2012)

Question 307: When will we see the 6th Edition of Who's the Employer? It's been over 3 years since the 5th Edition. Isn't it time to come out with an updated version?

Answer: You're right. And I have. And you can see it as soon as you buy it!

It has been a busy 3+ years since I released the 5th edition. In a sense, that's good because the book draws from the situations, experiences, questions, seminars, and discussions in which I am involved as a speaker and attorney with SunGard. But it also means that my time to devote to a project like updating and adding to Who's the Employer is limited.

What's new in the 6th edition? Of course, everything has been reviewed and updated. In addition I have expanded the book's coverage of multiple employer plans, rehired employees, state and federal efforts to address misclassification of workers, and ERISA issues. In the process, I've added many more examples, bringing the total number of examples to nearly 1,000.

With the 6th edition, I'm taking a different approach to binding and delivery. The last two editions have been loose-leaf, to facilitate photocopying, but many readers have told me they prefer a bound version. Done.

I'm also on the road so much that I do not have time to handle fulfilling orders for the book. That will now be handled by Amazon.com or by one of their affiliates. Yes, you can buy the book on Amazon, but I'd appreciate it if you'd use this link for their CreateSpace affiliate because I get a higher royalty if you do. It's mundane, but honest.

Many of my readers have enjoyed using the web version of the book, which I used to sell as a separate product. That no longer works with this arrangement. But, I have a simple way around that. Buy the book, and I'll give you the web version free. Just send me an email (the instructions are at the beginning of the book) and I'll email you access instructions.

I expect to have the web version available in early July. (It takes a long time to add the many hyperlinks to make the web version an effective research tool.)

The web version of the 6th edition should be available until I issue the web version of the 8th edition. (4th edition web subscribers: Take note. Your subscription will be expiring soon!)

The total price for the book plus the web subscription is actually lower than the price for the two products in the 5th edition.

Thanks to all who have encouraged and supported my efforts. I know you'll find the 6th edition of Who's the Employer to be a valuable addition to your retirement plan library.
