The district court properly applied federal common law precedents to interpret the contractual language of defendant's severance plan. Excerpt: "The district court did not decide whether or not the severance plan is a employee welfare benefit plan under ERISA, reasoning that 'general rules' of contract interpretation apply regardless. This is an imprecise statement." [Cassidy v. Akzo Nobel Salt, Inc., No. 01-1580 (6th Cir. Oct. 21, 2002)]
