AmyETPA Posted October 4, 2021 Posted October 4, 2021 We sent a large group of 5558s to the IRS via Fed Ex on July 27th. Our clients have now started receiving denials of the 5558 because they were not received timely. Tried calling the IRS and they have too many calls and the line just hangs up on you. I know this happened back in 2010, wondering if anyone else has had this issue this year?

Well they must have processed a bunch of 5558s recently because it seems a lot of folks are getting notices. Assuming you have proof of shipment and delivery, get a POA on at least one of the cases, and call until you get through. I probably re-dialed 50 times the last time and I finally got put on hold instead of disconnected. After you get through, you plead your case (with prof of timely shipment) and you explain that you sent them bulk and would like to provide a list rather than deal with 150 POAs. Depending on circumstances, they should let you fax a list or send a list on electronic media. The last electronic media I sent was in October of last year, and it wasn't processed until April... They are ware of these issues those so most of the folks will be pretty understanding and will find a way to help. Must haves before you call to avoid a wasted 3 hour call: - POA - Proof of mailing the 5558 Bill Presson and AmyETPA 2

I'm hopeful as we do have proof of shipment for these, just not something we want to deal with on October 5th! Bill Presson 1
DA Posted October 20, 2021 Posted October 20, 2021 We just started hearing from clients on Monday for an envelope that we mailed July 19th - three were denied and one was approved. I checked the tracking status at USPS and it shows that it is in-transit arriving late and the certified mail shows that it was initiated but does not show it was received/signed (and we don't have the green receipt back). I tracked a batch that we mailed on July 30th and the tracking/certified is the same so it doesn't look like the end steps are being done when the envelopes get to the IRS. AmyETPA - what was your resolution - were you able to get through on the phone number?
mattmc82 Posted December 13, 2021 Posted December 13, 2021 So I got my first denial in a batch where all the others were approved. I think I discovered why this happened. check the address on the notice versus what is on the 5558 / 5500. my client had a zipcode change that the department of treasury updated that we did not know about. does anyone know if sending a copy of the extension plus proof of timely filing to Internal Revenue Service, Attn: EP Accounts Unit, MS: 6552, Ogden, UT 84201 or fax to 877-792-2864 still works? I cannot get through to the IRS at all.
