Bird Posted June 10, 2019 Posted June 10, 2019 Has anyone used the penalty relief program ($500 flat fee)? Experience? We had someone use it, filed/paid in January, and they've received two letters so far saying "we need more time" implying they are researching it. Seems weird...or maybe not, I can see how hard it might be to cash a check and check a box. Ed Snyder
RatherBeGolfing Posted June 10, 2019 Posted June 10, 2019 I have used it and I have never had any issues with it. I don't recall if I have received the "we need more time" notice on a EZ penalty relief filing, but I have received similar ones for other thing and it has always been a time/resource issue with the IRS, they just hadn't gotten to it yet. They can take several weeks to months to process 5558 filings so who knows...
Kristina Posted June 11, 2019 Posted June 11, 2019 You can only use it when you file the 5500-EZ. I do not believe you can use it when you get a letter about late/not filing from the IRS. I think you confused them. Kristina
Pam Posted June 11, 2019 Posted June 11, 2019 There may not be a problem. I used it last year to file a late 5500EZ, received two such letters stating that they were researching before ultimately receiving a letter acknowledging the filing and payment and advising that no further action needed to be taken.
Barbara Posted June 11, 2019 Posted June 11, 2019 I've used it several times without an issue. never got anything back from IRS either.
Thoringaard, FSA Posted June 12, 2019 Posted June 12, 2019 January, huh? Right in the middle of the government shutdown?
