"Employers who collected and paid FICA taxes on severance payments (and their employees) may be entitled to refunds of those FICA taxes. With rates as high as 15.3%, the refunds can be substantial. The refund procedures are complex. Employers cannot simply amend their employment tax returns and claim a refund."
